Barry Levinson and ESPN films debuted a new documentary, The Band That Wouldn’t Die on October 13th. The film is an artistic collection of the turbulent history of football in Baltimore and the Baltimore Colts marching band, who together endured the loss of their team and survived to become the Baltimore Marching Ravens.
The film chronicles the highlights and down turn of the Colts before their mid-night departure to Indianapolis. The struggle of band leaders and former Governor William Donald Shaffer to bring football back to Baltimore provides the personal narrative to illustrate the City’s loss.
From hiding band uniforms in a mausoleum to touring as the NFL’s misfit band and winning over the Maryland state legislature playing the Colts fight song, Levinson intertwines contemporary interviews with archival footage to show the integral role the Marching Colts played in returning the NFL to Charm City.
The film has run seeral times on ESPN networks and will run again on Oct. 25th at 9pm and Dec. 25th at 5pm on ESPN Classic.
