We hadn't planned to write a briefs column on the Fourth, but then life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.
As we wrote earlier today, Allen Klein passed away Saturday at age 77. John Belushi satirized him in "The Rutles" (see above). From the comments on our article and what we're seeing posted elsewhere, Klein isn't getting many tributes. Even the headline on the BBC's story, "Beatles 'shark' Klein dies at 77" couldn't find a nice thing to say. Here's the New York Times obituary and the Los Angeles Times version. Services will be held Tuesday in New York, according to Hollywood.net.
Yoko Ono's latest blog post mentions that to celebrate her receiving The 2009 Venice Biennale Lifetime Achievement Golden Lion, over 1,000 billboards with the word "DREAM" have been installed around Italy. You can see pictures on a special Flckr account.
The latest blog on the Mary Hopkin MySpace page hits on a couple of topics, including a criticism of those selling promos of Mary's newer albums on eBay and a warning that the import album "Portrait of Mary Hopkin" is not authorized and also is not good quality. The two reviews on Amazon.com support the blog's statement that it should be avoided. We've reviewed several of Mary's releases available through her website. Also, here's our interview with her.
More sad news to report: In our last briefs, we mentioned that Drake Levin of Paul Revere and the Raiders was seriously ill with cancer. We're sorry to tell you Levin passed away Saturday morning. There's a tribute to Levin on fellow Raider Phil "Fang" Volk's home page.
