Arriving in our mailbox today was the 500th issue of Mad magazine. Along with the new material in the issue, there are retro pages recalling the magazine's past. One such spread includes a caricature of Ringo Starr originally from a 1964 Breck Shampoo parody. And Doug Gilford's Mad Cover site, which has indexes of all the times Mad took a poke at the Beatles, has this trivia question about one of those Mad Fold-Ins on the inside back cover: "Al Jaffee's 3rd Fold-In (for issue #88) was unusual for what reason besides featuring The Beatles?" (The tease line on the Fold-In said, "The only hope for curing Beatle-mania.") The answer to that question is here.
Police in Grand Junction, Colo., are searching for the thief who broke into a home and stole over 550 vinyl albums, including a collection of 167 Beatles albums worth an estimated $10,000, reports the Associated Press.
Ornette Coleman's Meltdown Festival, which begins June 9 in the UK, will feature Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band with Sean Lennon and Cornelius June 13 at Royal Festival Hall. Other acts appearing during the festival include Patti Smith, Yo La Tengo, Bobby McFerrin and David Murray. More information is on the festival website.
