PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) proposed that Ice Cream makers replace cow's milk in its products and use a mother's breastmilk instead, citing that it is a healthier alternative for humans.  PETA wrote a letter to the founders of Ben & Jerry's (Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield ) explaining  the numerous cruelties of milking cows and the hazards of cows milk to humans.  The full article can be read Time Magazine.

While I am a supporter of protecting animals, this idea is a bit radical to me.  I have nursed all three of my children and I can't imagine the amount of milk supply and time  that must be required to provide enough milk for a gallon of ice cream.  According to the Ben & Jerry it would take 1 1/2 gallons of milk or twelve pounds to create a gallon of ice cream.   Can you imagine?

According to the Times Magazine article , The Le Leche League the largest breast feeding support organization seemed less then supportive of  this idea. Additionally, consumers would have mixed opinions about consuming ice cream from  mother's breastmilk.

What are you feelings about this?  Here is PETA's reply to Ben & Jerry's  response in The PETA  Files  the official PETA Blog.

Live fully,

Mia
