PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) proposed that Ice Cream makers replace cow's milk in its products and use a mother's breastmilk instead, citing that it is a healthier alternative for humans. PETA wrote a letter to the founders of Ben & Jerry's (Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield ) explaining the numerous cruelties of milking cows and the hazards of cows milk to humans. While I am a supporter of protecting animals, this idea is a bit radical to me. I have nursed all three of my children and I can't imagine the amount of milk supply and time that must be required to provide enough milk for a gallon of ice cream. According to the Ben & Jerry it would take 1 1/2 gallons of milk or twelve pounds to create a gallon of ice cream. Can you imagine?
According to the Times Magazine article , The Le Leche League the largest breast feeding support organization seemed less then supportive of this idea. Additionally, consumers would have mixed opinions about consuming ice cream from mother's breastmilk.
