Last week my family was on vacation at a beautiful, private lake in Virginia.  We, as a family, love the water; so, having the opportunity to go boating, fishing and swimming is always a family favorite.

As a young girl my dad's family instilled in me the love of fishing.  I remember my grandmother, uncle and aunt taking all the grandchildren with them for a day of water fun--but, most importantly, fishing.  It has always been my hope that my children will come to enjoy this great sport as much as me.

To prepare for this weekend, I got a fishing coach. This was our third fishing excursion this summer. During the first two trips I caught nothing. Not one fish. In fact my children no longer wanted to go fishing with Mom because they were tired of no results. Rick (my coach) was a nice, simple man who understood the lake waters and the habits of the fish. He helped me select just the right hooks, weights and bait for these lake waters. He helped me redefine my cast. Our goal was my absolute success.

It was a very successful week for me. Every day, I caught loads of fish - mostly perch, crappies and catfish. It seemed that I was successful at every cast.  Zip!  Zip! My line was always pulling!  I watched others around me cast again and again without any bites less than a foot or two away from me.  We were fishing in the same water but we were realizing different results. What was the difference?

People ask me all the time about the benefit of having a personal coach. Some are interested in what coaching is, some want to know what coaching do for them specifically, while others want to know what qualifies me to coach anyone.

I have learned that all of our life most of us live as a noun. We often go through our lives describing ourselves as "Mom, Wife, Daughter, Employee, Doctor, Chemist, Assistant, etc."  Many of us never realize that to achieve the things that we want in our lives, we must become verbs  - Write, Exercise, Concentrate, Dream, Examine, Improve, Invite, Imagine, Learn, Listen, Move,  Plan, Succeed, Trust. The coaching process allows individuals (Nouns) learn how to become Verbs and achieve their goals in their lives.

Fishing to me is a metaphor for living.

To be successful at fishing, or in life, you must have the following elements:

  1. You must have a plan and know where you are going. Life has many different routes and outcomes. Having a specific personal plan help you realize success quicker.
  2. You have to have the right equipment. Have you ever tried to fish with the wrong hooks in waters loaded with fish? The result equals no fish. Life operates the same way. If we fail to equip our lives with the tools we need for success, then one year later we have a list of what we should have done instead of checking off what we have done. Think about it?
  3. You need a coach who has been there and realized success. When I chose my fishing coach last week, I wanted someone who I knew could help me. Someone who has already done what I wanted to do. In my work as a coach, my best clients are women who are attracted to me because I understand work/life/balance and the importance of creating a life that acknowledges your highest values. I coach mothers on the best ways to accomplish what they want given our specific unique distractions and the essential support system that we need to reduce personal stress and anxiety.
  4. Be patient and willing to try. Stop making excuses. Invest in yourself. Mothers actually believe the excuses that they make about time, money and opportunity to do whatever it is that they want. I wanted to get better result at fishing. I invested in a fishing coach and success was my result.

My challenge to you this week is to answer the following questions:

What is holding you back from living the life of your dreams?

What action(s) do you need to take to make a shift right now?

Live fully,

Mia
