Last week my family was on vacation at a beautiful, private lake in Virginia. We, as a family, love the water; so, having the opportunity to go boating, fishing and swimming is always a family favorite.
As a young girl my dad's family instilled in me the love of fishing. I remember my grandmother, uncle and aunt taking all the grandchildren with them for a day of water fun--but, most importantly, fishing. It has always been my hope that my children will come to enjoy this great sport as much as me.
To prepare for this weekend, I got a fishing coach. This was our third fishing excursion this summer. During the first two trips I caught nothing. Not one fish. In fact my children no longer wanted to go fishing with Mom because they were tired of no results. Rick (my coach) was a nice, simple man who understood the lake waters and the habits of the fish. He helped me select just the right hooks, weights and bait for these lake waters. He helped me redefine my cast. Our goal was my absolute success.
It was a very successful week for me. Every day, I caught loads of fish - mostly perch, crappies and catfish. It seemed that I was successful at every cast. Zip! Zip! My line was always pulling! I watched others around me cast again and again without any bites less than a foot or two away from me. We were fishing in the same water but we were realizing different results. What was the difference?
People ask me all the time about the benefit of having a personal coach. Some are interested in what coaching is, some want to know what coaching do for them specifically, while others want to know what qualifies me to coach anyone.
I have learned that all of our life most of us live as a noun. We often go through our lives describing ourselves as "Mom, Wife, Daughter, Employee, Doctor, Chemist, Assistant, etc." Many of us never realize that to achieve the things that we want in our lives, we must become verbs - Write, Exercise, Concentrate, Dream, Examine, Improve, Invite, Imagine, Learn, Listen, Move, Plan, Succeed, Trust. The coaching process allows individuals (Nouns) learn how to become Verbs and achieve their goals in their lives.
Fishing to me is a metaphor for living.
To be successful at fishing, or in life, you must have the following elements:
My challenge to you this week is to answer the following questions:
What is holding you back from living the life of your dreams?
What action(s) do you need to take to make a shift right now?
Live fully,
Mia
