The Five Commandments of Camping

Last weekend, my family decided to go camping. My husband and son have gone camping a few times with their local Cub Scout troop, but we haven’t gone camping as a family in several years. I enthusiastically packed everything I believed we would need to make this trip memorable. My husband asked me to book the campsite and check the weather. No problem.

When I called the campsite, the receptionist asked me if I might be interested in a cabin rental. I thought, “Yes, I am interested in staying in a cabin and visiting the tent throughout the night.” So, I called my husband and he said, “No, we want to camp outside in the tent and work on this together as a unit.” So, I was back to plan A.

We drove about 1 ½ hours to Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park, Camp-Resort in Pennsylvania. This campground is  the perfect place for wimpy campers like me. The camping areas are all on freshly cut lawns. There are a host of organized activities for the family. Perfect place to visit for beginning campers. (B.T.W.) The Restrooms were outstanding. (Another camping issue I have had in the past).

We took out the tent and reviewed the directions. Everyone helped out. The children assembled the poles for the tent, while my husband and I put all the parts together. Next, we started the logs in the fire pit. Everything was going according to our plan perfectly until, five minutes after we finished everything, it started to rain hard.

My husband asked, “Did you check the weather report?” I replied, “No!” It continued to rain off and on with plenty of thunder. Oops! We decided to pack up and go home.

We laughed the entire drive home. The children exclaimed from the back seat, “Didn’t you see the news report today, mom?” The tent is now set up in our backyard.

Here are my Five Commandments of Camping:

1. Always check the weather before going camping.

2. Always pack food that does not require fire.

3. Always listen to your spouse when asked to check the weather report.

4. Remember to laugh at your mistakes.

5. Remember that you are always creating memories. I will never live this one down.

Share your vacation nightmare mishap.  Let's laugh together.

Live fully,

Mia
