Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?

June 2, 11:48 AM

Pick a Country, Any Country…

Do you have a fifth grader yet? Are you smarter than your child? Obviously, I’m going for the “Are you smarter than a fifth grader?” angle here, but seriously…. Are you? Would you be brave enough to pick from a deck of questions that might be asked on any given fifth grade geography test?

Geography changes, bottom line. Since we were in school, boundaries have changed, rulerships have changed, and for some of us, entire walls have collapsed.

Years ago, we had to learn world capitals, and we were introduced to bits and pieces of different cultures filled with other ways of thinking, cooking and celebrating. We probably viewed these things as another “have to.” Now, we can explore these things with wide eyes and an eagerness to learn all we can.

Pick one country every two months and immerse yourself in its way of life. Discover the cuisine of the country and fix a few dishes. Learn a few phrases and say them to your family. Understand the landscape of the country and a basic overview of their history. In doing so, you’ll be enriching your life and transferring this knowledge to your children. It’s more important now than ever to gear our children towards a more empathetic and understanding view of life beyond U.S. borders.

We can’t all hop on an airplane anytime we want and visit these places; however, just as we tell our children, a journey may only be one book away!

Live fully,

Mia
