This is an homage to the films that wrongfully and fabulously taught adolescents and teenagers of the seventies, eighties and nineties how to love. They might be make believe, but movies affect us and knowing all of the sources for our ridiculous expectations in love..... is helpful in overcoming these expectations. How fun it would be to write movie synopses the way they should honestly translate........
(Beware the spoils)......
--10. Some Kind of Wonderful- (Eric Stoltz, Lea Thompson, Mary Stuart Masterson) Irritating love triangle that is so obviously a mistake to everyone but the leading man, alas ends how it should .....with the female best friend winning the guy after a mean and immature stunt..... backfires on the bad guy in the leading man's favor. Goodbye princess, hello tomboy. 1987. Dir. John Hughes.
--09. Pretty Woman- (Richard Gere, Julia Roberts) Hooker with a heart of gold nabs her "Henry Higgins" in this modernish (1990) rip off of Pygmalion. She's down to earth and fidgets, he's not and resists her until he doesn't. Those who do not hate to love, or love to hate this overly dramatic and desperately indulgent movie are lying, boring, or both. Seductively delightful. Dir. Garry Marshall.
--08. Valley Girl- (Nicolas Cage, Deborah Foreman) 1983 Classic 'different worlds' situation between a girl and a boy who bust through the West Side Story curse, in order to eventually behave whimsically in a "we are so in love" montage set to delicious eighties music. Trite. Dated. Fantastic. Dir. Martha Coolidge.
--07. Pretty In Pink- (Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, James Spader, Jon Cryer) (1986) An economic difference takes us back to ancient times (or less progressive countries) where people aren't allowed to love who they want to because one of them is a rich arrogant snot who wrongfully clings to worn out traditions. The girl with less money is a hot commodity, though no one but the rich snot and her overzealous puppy dog best guy friend will admit it. The rich snot wins her hand even though he doesn't deserve the poor and honest hipster. Set to a stellar soundtrack. Dir. John Hughes.
--05. Grease- (Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta) A squeaky crisp Aussie makes out with a rambling greasy player one summer and thinks it meant something when she runs into him at school. He snaps out of being a total jerk, and they both decide to change everything true about themselves to win each other over under false pretenses. An excellent message to send to young girls and boys.1978. Dir. Randal Kleiser.
--04. Footloose- (Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer) Collective, small town, archaic religious beliefs about rock music and dancing---- are both the barricade and super-glue for this unstoppable love. When bad-haired, bad boy meets token stereotypical wild preacher's daughter, hornet's nests get kicked in the form of a fought-for community dance at a VFW hall just outside of town. Preacher-daddy acquiesces though reluctantly. 1984 Dir. Herbert Ross.
