It’s bitter winter weather, and your radiators or central heating go on full blast. Suddenly, your otherwise healthy pet starts to sniffle, sneeze, and cough. The problem could be inhalant allergies. The heating system circulates dust and other particles that make for breathing issues.
Here’s a solution: OTC Benadryl capsules. Depending upon the size of your pet, you will need to give half a capsule or a whole capsule. The best delivery system is a cream cheese ball packed with the medicine. Don’t make the ball of cream cheese too big, unless you’re medicating a large pet.
To cleanse the animal’s eyes of allergens, you can use Collyrium eye wash, also OTC. Have someone else hold the animal firmly while you administer two drops, making sure not to poke the pet in the eyeball. If your pet is hypersensitive or wriggly, wait until it is sleepy and then medicate.
It’s also holiday season, and your pet will lunge for gourmet goodies, some of which will make for vomiting and diarrhea. A Pepto Bismol tablet, cut in half for a small pet or whole size for a larger one, can go into a cheese ball for easy delivery. A couple of these per day when vomiting is present may solve the problem. If not, you may need to call your vet for a professional consult.
