Venturing all the way from Selkirk, Scotland, the brothers of Frightened Rabbit took the esurance Main Stage at the Monolith Festival on a Saturday afternoon that resembled the same drizzly, bone-chilling weather of the duo’s home country. “It was amazing,” Grant Hutchison, drummer and younger brother said through his thick Scottish accent, “It’s quite weird playing at this altitude. Our heads were kind of pulsating and we’re a bit jetlagged but this is definitely the most beautiful place we’ve ever played.”
Starting out in cover bands in their tiny hometown in Scotland, Grant explains, “Cover bands are the only thing that does well in that area.” Playing songs by Less Than Jake, Blink 182, and other emo pop punk artists, it took some time before older brother, Scott, would play in a band with Grant, “It’s not really that cool to be in a band with your wee brother.”
Having just completed their third album a few weeks ago, set to release in March 2010 with the first single coming out in November, Frightened Rabbit approached the creation of this album far differently than before, “Scott locked himself away a month in a village on the east coast of Scotland to finish writing this album,” Grant comments, “For the second album [The Midnight Organ Fight], we knew every note and beat when we went into the studio but with this one, it was more free. Songs would continue to develop in the studio.”
Currently touring the States through the end of the month with The Twilight Sad and We Were Promised Jetpacks, be sure to catch this amazing line-up before they head back to Europe.
