Looking for a new addition to your Holiday tables? Serendipity is a local Santa Cruz company offering Jams, Spreads and Preserves. They are using as many Organic ingredients as possible in their products and happily offer samples to the passerby. Recently they were at the New Leaf Community Market in Felton, where I was able to sample a couple of their jams.

The Granny Smith Apple and Port jam was not what I expected from an apple jam. I expected a heavily apple flavor with so much sweetness it would blind your tongue. What I tasted instead was a symphony of flavor with a natural sweetness that you would get from eating a Granny Smith Apple. It had a velvety smooth texture and a complexity of flavor from the addition of the Port. It’s a sophisticated jam that will leave a lasting flavor on your tongue. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The truly surprising jam was the Spiced Carrot. I expected a strong carrot flavor and little else, however, the flavor was reminiscent of Spice Cake or Pumpkin Pie. The texture was also velvety, not what you would normally get from carrots, and the spice blend was superb. It was strong enough to taste but not overpowering. This jam would please even those that loath carrots and I could see it being spread across Thanksgiving Dinner rolls.

All in all, Serendipity offered some delicious jams that go beyond toast and bagels. With prices ranging from $5.49 to $6.99, it is not your least expensive option for jams but the 8 ounce jars are worth every penny. They offer flavors including Red Raspberry, Apricot & Cognac, Granny Smith Apple & Port, Spiced Carrot and Trilogy, a blend of berries. There is a flavor for everyone. Currently, the jams are available in some local stores and at some Farmer’s Markets.
