A little while back this column looked at odd collectibles, non-typical things that surround us that we may not think of as worth collecting, but people do.  We barely scratched the surface so another installment is in order.

We begin with coasters.  Not the roller type, even though the experience of riding a wide range of roller coasters in various parks around the country or even the world would make for a great “collecting” endeavor.  We can hit on that on another day.  The coaster we’re thinking of here is the type you set your favorite beverage on.  It may seem boring, but it is safer.

The Museum of Beverage Containers and Advertising is actually two museums located in Millersville and Springfield, TN.  They feature a range of items from bottles, cans, signs, glasses, and yes, coasters.

Bottle-Cap MuseumFor bottle cap aficionados there is Dawson and Stevens Classic 50’s Diner in Grayling, MI.  They can boast having over 10,000 pieces of Coca-Cola memorabilia inside the Bottle-Cap Museum.

Coke bottles may be collectibles, but so are their milk counterparts.  Milk bottle collectors know about the National Association of Milk Bottle Collectors, Inc., who held their most recent convention this past June in Hersey, PA.  However there are many other web sites one can visit on the topic of antique milk bottles which will be the subject of an upcoming article.

Letterheads are another item of interest that has its following.  The stationary used by various businesses as well as people in politics or the entertainment and sports industries can be quite fascinating and many can have historical significance as well.

Our research also came across the Golf Ball Guide that includes pictures of over a thousand different branded balls.  Also balls imprinted with names of tournaments or from other non-golf companies like Coke or Disney can be another collecting specialty.

Tonka trucks have long been a favorite of children. In the 1950’s and 60’s these well-constructed steelTonka Truck toys were on many wish lists to Santa.  The Tonka Museum has some great pictures of many of these vehicles.

This installment will end with pens.  Whether they advertise a business, note a travel destination or are just a novelty, pens of different types have been around for the ages.  Quills, fountain, ballpoint, Bics and much more can be found at penscollection.com.

What is your collecting interest? Will you share it? Please send me an email at dsl417@msn.com and maybe we can share it with our readers.
