It is official--San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has pulled out of the California Gubernatorial Race.
Mayor Newsom says his mayoral duties and the recent birth of his daughter do not allow him to devote the attention the campaign deserves.
Mayor Newsom told Bay City News, "This is not an easy decision. But it is one I make with the best intentions for my wife, daughter, the residents of the city and county of San Francisco, and California Democrats.”
However, this announcement did not come as a surprise to many. Mayor Newsom, a Democrat, has trailed behind California Attorney General, Jerry Brown in recent field polls. This is even though Brown has not yet announced his candidacy.
Brown has also raised over 7 million dollars toward his campaign, that is 7- times that of Newsom’s fundraising to date.
Political analysts do note that although Newsom in no longer a gubernatorial candidate, he could still run for lieutenant governor.
Newsom’s campaign did not comment on his future political plans.
With Newsom’s bump off the ballot, Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, is for now the only official California gubernatorial campaign contender.
