The Gwinnett Gladiators were defeated at the hands of the Elmira Jackals on Saturday night, including their largest ever margin of defeat, most goals allowed in a period all season, and most penalty minutes in a game all season. The Jackals special teams had a field day, scoring on their first power play of the game at the 3:51 mark of the first period, after Matt Siddall went off on a tripping minor.

The Jackals took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Keegan Dansereau, who was open in front of the net and redirected a pass from Mat Robinson from just above the goal line to the right of Gwinnett Goalie Danny Taylor.

Elmira added another tally just 24 seconds later in a four-on-four opportunity after Gwinnett’s Dan Sullivan and Elmira’s Keegan Dansereau each were assessed double-minors for roughing. Defenseman Brennan Turner scored on a high shot from just outside the left circle which beat Taylor on the stick side giving Elmira a 3-0 lead.

Elmira went up 4-0 on a Guillaume Lepine’s first goal of his pro career at 4:47 of the period. Danny Taylor directd away the first two point blank shots, but couldn’t contain the third, which got under him and across the goal line.

Justin Donati, who shares his team lead in points with his linemate and brother, Tyler Donati, then scored two goals in less than two minutes, both on the power play to extend the onslaught of Elmira goals, making the score 6-0. Tyler assisted on both tallies.

The Gladiators would finally get on the board when Elmira goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak misplayed a puck from behind his own net and sent it to a wide open Adam Berti in the slot, who shot into an empty Elmira net for his second goal of the season.

Justin Donati completed his hat trick, scoring his third goal in less than 10 minutes, just over two minutes after Caruana’s tally, making the score 7-2.

The teams combined for six goals in the period.

The Gladiators would notch their third goal of the game just 1:26 into the third period, but that was all the Gladiators would muster, as the Jackals pumped in four more goals in the last frame for a final of 11-3.

Justin Donati’s four goals was the first hat trick allowed at home by an opponent since April 7, 2007 when Mark Lee scored three for Charlotte in a 4-1 Gladiators loss. Justin
finished with four goals and one assist, while his brother, Tyler, finished with five assists, and Elmira’s Chris Korchinski and Keegan Dansereau each chipped in two goals apiece.

Adam Berti was the lone bright spot for the Gladiators, as he finished with a goal and an assist.

Newly assigned from AHL Chicago, Gwinnett’s Tim Filangieri finished with a plus-minus rating of +1, the only Gladiator to finish on the positive side.

The Gladiators failed to score a power play goal for the second night in a row, after scoring at least one in their first nine games.

The 14 combined goals by both teams in the game shattered a league mark of 12 on the season.

Danny Taylor finished with 27 saves on the night for the Gladiators, and Elmira’s Michael-Lee Teslak stopped 36 in the win.

The Gladiators, who fell to 0-3 all time at home against Elmira, drop to 6-3-1-1 on the season, while the Jackals improve to 8-3-1-1.

The Gladiators next travel to South Carolina for a two game set against the Stingrays next weekend.
