USGS contractor replaces workers with combined 120 years experience to break union
Morning commuters couldn’t help but notice the 10-foot tall man waving at them as they drove past the US Geological Survey headquarters in Reston yesterday. Workers and staff of the Operating Engineers Local 99 joined their inflatable “Big Man” for a lively demonstration at dawn to protest the company’s failure to re-hire workers who lost their jobs during a recent changeover of contractors.
“It’s clear to us that these experienced workers were replaced for no other reason than their union activity,” said Local 99 Assistant Business Manager Harry Geety. “We believe that this is a direct attempt to break the union.” NVE Inc. and their subcontractor Complete Building Services - the two companies responsible for maintenance and operations of the USGS facility - quickly replaced almost the entire company’s staff during the changeover, losing over 120 years of combined service by union engineers. Local 99 has since filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge against the employer with the National Labor Relations Board on behalf of their displaced members.
