In a poignant mix of solemnity and street theater, a demonstration paid tribute to the Iraqi journalist currently in custody for throwing his shoes at President Bush. Standing over a collection of shoes representing Iraqi lives lost during the U.S. occupation, leaders from Code Pink and a coalition that included Veterans groups condemned the American President.
In front of the gathered news media and law enforcement, a protester wearing a large Bush head stood in for the President as the sole source of their rage. Dancing and laughing in a mocking tone meant to represent the President's indifference and glee as the hostility and shoes flew his way outside the White House.

While we are delighted there's a new administration coming in, we want George Bush held accountable for his acts.

The protesters pledged to be similarly tough on the incoming President-elect Obama if he pulls the troops out of Iraq but sends them to Afghanistan rather than bringing them home.
In Iraqi the shoe throwing has brought to the surface the long simmering dissatisfaction with the liberation that has become a long term U.S. presence. It may very well be the lasting symbol of the outgoing President, who flew over Pennsylvania Avenue as the other shoes dropped.
