Kansas State basketball unofficially kicked of the 2009-10 season yesterday with an 89-53 win over Pittsburgh State on Sunday at Bramlage.
Five players scored in double figures on the day, and the Wildcats at one point led by as many as 43 points. Jacob Pullen led the way with 17 points, including hitting 5-of-7 shots from behind the arc. The junior also had seven assists and just one turnover on the day.
“I thought for the most part we played pretty unselfish,” said head coach Frank Martin. “We had 20 assists, and that is a pretty good number to have in your first game.”
In his first action as a Wildcat, junior transfer Curtis Kelly snagged a double-double, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
“I was excited and just happy to be out on the floor,” Kelly said after having to sit out last season after transferring from UConn. “It is hard to enjoy the moment when you have coach Frank yelling at you from the other side of the court so you have to make sure you snap back into reality and just keep playing hard.”
Also finishing in double figures were Jamar Samuels with 16 points, Denis Clemente had 14, and freshman Nick Russell finished with 10.
Five-star recruit Wally Judge came off the bench and recorded eight points and had 10 rebounds in 23 minutes of action. Freshman Rodney McGruder, a four-star recruit, was 0-for-4 from the field in 11 minutes of playing time.
“My biggest surprise today was Jordan Henriquez,” Samuels said of the Wildcats freshman 7-footer. “I think he played very well. He makes the game much easier by blocking shots and rebounding for us.”
The Wildcats were good in transition scoring 25 fast-break points on the day, and scoring 38 points in the paint. Kansas State also took advantage of 23 Pitt State turnovers, turning them into 26 points.
