
A.J. Burnett pitched seven solid innings, Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui hit home runs and the Yankees beat the Phillies, 3-1 in game two of the World Series on Thursday. Burnett allowed only four hits and one run while striking out nine. The lone run against Burnett came on an RBI single by Matt Stairs in the second inning that gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
Teixeira tied the game with a solo homer in the fourth inning off of Pedro Martinez. Matsui gave the Yankees the lead when he homered in the sixth. After giving up two hits to start the seventh, Martinez was lifted in favor of Chan Ho Park. Jorge Posada’s pinch hit single off of Park scored the final run of the game.
Mariano Rivera pitched two scoreless innings to nail it down and even the series at one game apiece. Box
The Phillies won game one, 6-1 on Wednesday. Game three is scheduled for Saturday in Philadelphia at 7:57 ET (4:57 in Arizona) on FOX. Lefty Andy Pettitte will pitch for the Yankees while fellow southpaw Cole Hamels will go for the Phillies.
