Tonight we said goodbye to an Olympian streak and the determined Natalie Coughlin. Partnered with Alec Mazo, she showed grace and potential, but her swim fans couldn't compete with the football fans keeping Michael Irvin and his professional dance partner Anna Demidova afloat in this competition.
Natalie Coughlin breaks the streak of Olympic gold medalists winning the mirrorball that began with Olympic gold medalist in speed skating, Apolo Anton Ohno. Olympic gold medalist for beach volleyball Misty May-Treanor (paired with Maksim Chmerkovskiy) withdrew during season 7 due to a torn Achilles tendon. May-Treanor required surgery.
Chmerkovskiy became the second professional who had to withdraw. Tony Dovolani withdrew when his partner Sara Evans bowed out during season 3 due to her painful divorce proceedings.
Olympians had the edge, understanding commitment and competition, but this season, it's the entertainers that are leading.
To see Coughlin's development as a dancer, see the videos below.
Week 1: Salsa (19)
Rank: Tied for seventh place for individual dance only
Rank: (With relay dance score) Tied for seventh with Louie Vito and Chelsie Hightower
Week 2: Quickstep (21)

Week 3: Rumba (26)

Week 4: Bolero (24)

Week 5: Paso doble (22)

As I wrote before, there's no other explanation for the continued presence of Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova except that football fans also watch "Dancing with the Stars." His fan base is obviously stronger than Coughlin's.
