Oprah Winfrey offically announced to her sudio audience that she was ending The Oprah Winfrey Show, her amazingly popular program that began in 1986.  Although the announcement was made today, Friday November 20, 2009, the actual end will not be until be until Friday September 9, 2011, over 18 months from now.

Oprah said: "Twenty-five years feels right in my bones and feels right in my spirit." "Over this holiday break, my team and I will be brainstorming new ways that we can entertain you and inform you and uplift you when we return here in January.  And then, season 25 — we are going to knock your socks off."

Due in large part to The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah has become a cultural icon.  She is the woman who recommends books few people have heard of, then each becomes a national best seller.  She has had some of the most famous people in the world as guests on her show, and is known for giving away prizes to all members of her studio audience, most famously was "a new car" in 2004.

Although she is worth an estimated $2.7 billion, Oprah does not pay for the prizes she gives away.  Companies who covet "The Oprah Effect" are willing to absorb the cost in return for the exposure her show brings.  Millions of women gladly watch, listen, and learn from whatever wisdom Oprah is willing to impart.  Herein lies much of her mystique, and power.  Power that some say she has misused.

For instance, Oprah used her talk-show host position as a platform to endorse Presidential candidate Barack Obama.  That could be one reason why her show's ratings have dropped 7% since last year.  Before that she angered and upset people by elevating religious guru Eckhart Tolle and his teachings above that of Jesus Christ and the Bible.  (see video in previous article)  Still a very spiritual person, Oprah said prayer and careful thought led to her decision to end her show in 2011.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 18 months and beyond.  According to the Associated Press report released today "Winfrey, 55, is widely expected to start up a new talk show on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, a much-delayed joint venture with Discovery Communications Inc. that is projected to debut in 2011. OWN is to replace the Discovery Health Channel and will debut in some 74 million homes."
