How many people do you know that keep corduroy pants in their refrigerator? Even though I don’t believe him, Mitch McVicker says you can find some in his. Thanks to his patience with me, I was able to interview him via e-mail to help promote his upcoming show this Friday at the Vineyard Church in Wichita, Ks. Unfortunately for him (and me) I had to finish my article for my school paper first so this one got put on the back burner for a few days. Sorry Mitch.
Mitch McVicker makes his home in Atlanta, Ga with his wife Paula, and their daughter; Brooklyn. When Mitch isn’t working, he loves spending his time with his wife, and pushing his daughter on the swings and hunting with her for mushrooms.
My Husband and I have been listening to Mitch’s music for nearly ten years now, and have always been drawn to the bassy, gravelly voice singing out truths about life that we can relate to. There isn’t a time that I don’t drive past the flint hills or even just to Hutchinson, and don’t think of him singing about the how they are burning the fields in Kansas. When I asked Mitch to tell me who he is, his answer was this, “I don't have a right to try to sum up myself; I am too close to the subject. I want my music to be honest, passionate, and true. I am a father. I am a husband. I am a son. I am a friend. I am a believer. I am a musician who happens to be a Christian”
I, myself, particularly appreciate the last part of that quote “I am a musician who happens to be a Christian”, I wish everyone viewed their ministries that way. Here is some more of my interview with Mitch:
What are the strongest influences in your songwriting? A: the strongest influence is life. Just trying to stay empty and open enough to be filled and be creative.
What would I find in your refrigerator right now? A: Cottage cheese, salad, fruit, yogurt, chicken, and corduroy pants
Who are some of the people/artists that have impacted your songwriting the most, why? A: Rich Mullins was the most honest follower Jesus I have ever known...and the very best communicator and writer that has ever lived. Tom Waits is the second most creative lyricist I know of. Bob Schneider is the most creative musical artist I know of.
Who inspired you to take up the guitar and start singing? A: My parents put me in guitar lessons when I was 10. My teacher was Jeannie Gish. When I was little I wanted to be Bryan Adams, mr mister, John Denver, or Chicago.
Despite his interesting taste in music as a youngster, Mitch grew up to be an amazing singer/songwriter. His music is an honest journey of a human soul. And his shows are not to be missed. He will be performing at Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 2020 East Blake Street, Wichita, Ks, October 16th at 6:30pm. You can check his website for other dates; www.mitchmcvicker.com , Mitch is also a Compassion International speaker and artist and can be booked for those events as well.
Thanks to Mitch for letting me bombard him with questions and actually taking the time to answer them. I hope this helps get the word out about his show, it’s going to be amazing.
