    What executive at Universal though up this one? A Jurassic Park movie not based on a Michael Crichton novel or directed by Steven Spielberg? Whoever heard of that? Yes, this was attempted as a way to capitalize on the success of Jurassic Park and The Lost World at the box office. With no novel as source material and Spielberg only producing, Jumanji and October Sky director Joe Johnston took to the director’s chair for this installment. The two lead actors from the first film, Sam Neill and Laura Dern returned as Dr. Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler.

    They are summoned by a divorced couple (William H. Macy and Tea Leoni) who have uncovered Site B from The Lost World. There are many things wrong with this from the get go, Richard Attenborough should have been present as John Hammond to lead the way instead of having two new lead actors who had no history with the franchise at all. Also why the island from the second film? This would have made sense if Jeff Goldblum returned given his lead role in The Lost World, but of course that was not what transpired.

    This film involved the two lead actors from the original film, so this film should have drawn inspiration from the original a bit more closely. Either have Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler return to the island from the original or travel to a whole new island. Hammond’s grandchildren Lex and Tim also should have returned, given how well they bonded with the lead actors onscreen in the first film. God forbid, Hammond and his grandchildren were only given cameos in The Lost World. Yet a lot of things in this film did not hold true to the original, and many things went wrong with it.

    Jurassic Park III both had a higher budget and less intake from the box office than Jurassic Park and The Lost World. There is some debate over whether The Lost World or this sequel is worse. However, this film is almost universally panned as opposed to some enjoying The Lost World. This film was also criticized for being a chase movie with no character development, or a rehash of the original. Some even criticized for its short length. Running at ninety minutes, like a comedy or a children’s film, instead of two hours. Along with having a smaller cast instead of the large ensemble from Jurassic Park and The Lost World.
