Senator Michael Bennet's greatest political liability is his abundant eyebrow hair. Tufts of his wild brows curl upward, giving him a sinister look.

I've heard some Colorado Democrats say they can't warm up to Bennet. They cite thoughtful reasons, of course. But as they talk, I'm thinking, "It's the eyebrows, right? They don't inspire trust."

Look at Senator Mark Udall's eyebrows. They're dense thickets, but their bushiness is carefully managed. They give his eyes an empathetic, sweetly schnauzer-like frame. Election-winning eyebrows, to be sure.

Andrew Romanoff, Bennet's Democratic challenger, also controls his brows, yet he doesn't look fussily metrosexual. His brows are lush and boyish, presenting a formidable challenge to Bennet's tangle of mad-professor brows.

Back in the day, if a man wanted to represent Colorado in the senate, he needed to sport a lurid mustache, a la George Chilcott, Nathaniel Hill and Horace Tabor.

If Bennet manages to hold his senate seat without taming his eyebrows, it will signal the beginning of a new era in Colorado political facial hair.

Of course, that also holds true if Jane Norton wins the race, becoming Colorado's first woman senator.
