Sock Summit 2009, a conference for hand knitters devoted solely (sorry!) to socks, took place August 6-9, about as far from New Jersey as a knitter can get without leaving the contiguous United States. At the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, sock knitters united to celebrate all things sock – books signings, classes, and an enormous marketplace for those wishing to bulk up their sock yarn stashes.
What’s so alluring about sock knitting? On the plus side, they’re a portable project, and offer knitters an endless array of options and techniques to try. Toe up or toe down, two socks on two circulars or traditional DPN, self-striping yarn or solid with cables are just a few way knitters can express themselves knitting socks.
On the down side, there’s second sock syndrome, working on wee pointy needles, and of course, grafting! Some knitters feel about the Kitchener stitch the way toddlers feel about booster shots.
