President Obama told Congressional leaders on Tuesday that he would not substantially reduce American forces in Afghanistan or shift the mission to just hunting terrorists there, but he indicated that he remained undecided about the major troop buildup proposed by his commanding general.
Obama's indecision has invited many to compare the current president to Jimmy Carter, one of the country's most unpopular presidents who had some Afghan troubles of his own. President Carter had many flaws (as do we all). You can question his strategy, but his intention was always peace. A reminder:
War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children.
