Do you remember as a child how your mom or dad seemed to have eyes in the back of their heads? You couldn’t get away with anything. Somehow my parents always knew what I was doing when I was into mischief.

I have found even more so that I cannot get away with anything when it comes to the Lord. Solomon says, ‘For the Lord sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes.’ As a Christian, why do we think we can get away with sin? Why is it that we think God is not going to notice when we participate in wrongdoing? When you think about it we would have to be total idiots to think God wasn’t watching. After all He lives within us - we can’t go anywhere or do anything without Him being right there!

The writer of Hebrews says, ‘Nothing in all creation can hide from Him. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes. This is the God to whom we must explain all that we have done.’ Now if that is not a sobering thought for you to deal with I don’t know what is. The Lord sees clearly what a man does.

In the context of Proverbs, chapter 5, specifically what the Lord sees is how we handle our relationship with our spouse. Even more specifically the Lord sees when we are unfaithful in any way. Remember the preceding verse - 'Why be captivated, my son, with an immoral woman, or embrace the breasts of an adulterous woman?' Then Solomon immediately says, “For the Lord sees clearly what a man does.” God is not pleased when we sin against Him and against our spouse by committing adultery or even thinking lustfully about another.

Do you know what the two most talked about topics in Scripture are? It’s not love, or heaven, or even salvation, but because God knows our hearts He addresses money and sex more than any other topic. That being said, when we control of our finances and our sexual passions by following what His Word tells us, we will be well on our way to living the abundant life He has meant for us to live.

Solomon continues with a warning: ‘An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him. He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his incredible folly.’ There is something about sexual sin that affects you to the point of others noticing. You are held captive by it and tangled in a web of deceit because of the false front you have to put up.

The Apostle Paul says, “Get rid of your evil deeds. Shed them like dirty clothes.” This verse rightly implies that when we are living a life of sin it will be as noticeable as if you were wearing filthy, stinking, clothes. Sin is a stench in the nostrils of God, and because of the amount of space He gives it in Scripture, sexual sin is especially rank in His nostrils.

As we pursue wisdom we must understand how important it is to stay sexually pure – you cannot truly be wise without it.
