Only God deserves our worship
As I’m sure you noticed, you were out of school yesterday because it was Election Day. While that didn’t mean much for us here in Kentucky this year, think back to a year ago. You could not go anywhere without seeing a sign in someone’s yard, a bumper sticker, or a campaign button on somebody’s shirt. No matter who the particular candidate was, people were very quick to plaster that person’s name on everything they own.
Fast forward to this past Spring, when the University of Kentucky decided to turn NCAA basketball on its ear and hire John Calipari. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Calipari fan and I am very excited to see what the Wildcats can do this year. But from the reception Coach Calipari received, you would think that he found a magical elixir that could cure AIDS, cancer, and the aftertaste of
Funyuns. I know this is hard to hear, Big Blue Nation, but he is just a man that coaches basketball.
Whether it is your favorite actor, your favorite athlete, your presidential candidate, or the cool kid in school that everybody wants to hang out with, we are all guilty of being fascinated with, or dare I say idolizing, other people. In fact, our society does all it can to promote this. Being famous seems so glamorous that some people even pretend to lose their kid in a
weather balloon to get on television. How crazy is that?
I hope you have heard the commandments that talk about not having any other idols before God and not coveting what your neighbor has, but I doubt that you realize this is what you do every time you treat a celebrity like they had a part in creating the universe. Guess what, God created them in the exact same way that He created you. He may have given them different talents and opportunities, but God doesn’t see them as being more valuable in His Kingdom or here on earth.
God wants us to keep things in perspective. We need to keep in mind that celebrities, politicians, athletes, and those popular kids at school are “just people.” The only One that deserves special treatment, more attention, or blatant worship is the God that created us. “Stop trusting in man, who has but a breath in his nostrils. Or what account is he?” (Isaiah 2:22 NIV) Think about it.
