Vision Quest & Meaghan Harrison open at School 33 on August 23

August 21, 5:14 PM

Opening Reception: Saturday, August 23rd from 6-9pm curated by Jason Hughes, School 33's Exhibitions Coordinator.

AUGUST 21-OCTOBER 4, 2008
opening celebration: Saturday, August 23, 2008 6-9pm

Featured artists include: Seth Adelsberger, Sarah Gamble, James Johnson, Christine Buckton Tillman, and Pat O’Malley

Through the use of painting, drawing, and sculpture each of these four artists employ subject matter intended to elicit a sense of connectivity through the mysteries of what we experience. Electromagnetic fields, radiation, meditation, prayer, hallucinations, melancholy, transcendence, paranoia, and the subconscious are all themes used by these artists in expressing the infinite, unknown, or unavoidable, which ultimately binds us all irrevocably.

Landscapes, mindscapes, faces and eyes are introduced over heavily worked surfaces, painstaking patterning, and intricate representation. As a result there is a dynamic shift in perspective that occurs between the visible and the invisible or the observed and the observer. While this dualism can be interpreted in many ways, Vision Quest emphasizes the longing for balance between the psychic realm and the physical world, while paying tribute to the process in striving to do so.

MEAGHAN HARRISON: TRUST
INAGURAL MEMBER’S GALLERY EXHIBITION
SCHOOL 33 ART CENTER

August 2 – September 7, 2008
Reception: Saturday, August 23rd 6-9pm
Interactive Performance 7-8pm

School 33 Art Center and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts are pleased to announce the Inaugural Exhibition of School 33’s Members’ Gallery, Meaghan Harrison’s solo exhibition, Trust.

Death, ceremony, human relations, economics and waste are the main themes that drive the current body of work by Meaghan Harrison, which comes together in the form of sculptures (totemic memorials), collages and the performance piece Trust. As defined, trust is a prediction of reliance, an unwritten code of ethics that is based on what one party knows about the other. The work exhibited aims to communicate our blind faith in everyday confrontations from the state of our economy and beliefs, to our relationships and mortality.

Collected liquor bottles, lottery tickets, sewn crepe, dumpster-dived furniture and the odd dollar store item come together to create Harrison ’s totemic memorials. Authentically aged, the totems come together though accumulation and are ceremoniously arranged. Not unlike paying homage to a deity or spirit that asks you to step into their sphere of exchange. In the Trust performance the artist invites one viewer at a time to enter a military parachute turned tent to receive a free manicure in exchange for conversation. This intimate experience within a gallery creates an environment for viewer and artist to engage in conversation.
