The quality of your makeup brushes can make or break your look. High quality brushes help to apply makeup more evenly, and they blend better than cheaper ones. Although higher quality brushes are usually more expensive, with proper care, they can last for a long time. People often neglect to their brushes, which can cause them to wear out and to hold onto bacteria. With all of the effort spent on cleaning the pores and preventing breakouts, there is no need to add bacteria to your face, when you can clean your brushes.

To keep brushes clean throughout the week, use a spritzing product such as Smashbox brush cleaner. (If you don’t want to spend $15 on brush cleaner, mix 3 parts water with 2 parts witch hazel and pour into a spray bottle.) Spray the bristles of the brush until slightly damp and gently rub the bristles back and forth on a paper towel as if you were painting a picture.

Although cleaning daily is a great way to extend the life of your brushes, they should be cleaned with shampoo once a week. Bare Minerals and Sephora both make excellent makeup brush shampoos. (If you’d rather not spend the extra money, you can clean your brushes with a gentle soap such as Aveeno, or you can use baby shampoo.)

To begin, run the bristles of the brush under lukewarm water holding the head of the brush down at an angle. Always do this under the faucet, and be careful not to get the metal park of the handle too wet. This can loosen the glue that binds the bristles to the wand, and your bristles may fall out. For this reason, NEVER soak your brushes.

Apply a dime sized drop of brush shampoo onto the bristles and lather by swirling the brush in the palm of your hand. Pointing the brush down gently squeeze the bristles under the faucet. Repeat until the water runs clear.

On a paper towel, lay brushes flat to dry. If you place them upright, it may create a hole in the bristles. Depending on the size of the brush, drying time can take anywhere from a couple of hours to overnight to dry, so it’s best to clean brushes at the end of the day. Do not blow dry your brushes.

Washing brushes not only protects your skin from bacteria and makeup residue that can build up, it also maximizes the brushes’ performance and extends their overall lifetime. You want to look your best, so take care of your investments, and they will take care of you.
