Anyone searching the net to find out if Lucas is going to release a "Ultimate" DVD collection of all six Star Wars movies, will find scores of articles and blogs about the subject. Are they all  just rumors and wishful thinking on the part of fans, or is there a basis to all of the hubbub? It turns out that the fans are not just whistling Wookies.

Back when episode 3 came out, Lucas commented several times in TV interviews he gave for such shows like Entertainment Tonight, that fan outcries of continuity errors and flaws would be corrected once all six films were re-cut and presented together. Several actors from episodes 1-3, also stated at the time that they had filmed additional scenes that would bridge the new trilogy with the original trilogy. In an interview on Entertainment Tonight, back in 2005, actor Jimmy Smits who played Senator Bail Organa (Princess Leia's adoptive father) claimed that he filmed a scene that was to be cut into episode 4, A New Hope, during the destruction of Alderaan. Even John Williams commented that he was re-scoring some music in episode 4 (the original Star Wars), adding The Imperial March (a.k.a. Darth Vader's Theme), stating that it was the only movie in the series that didn't include the theme.

These interviews sparked off the rumor mill, and for the next  4 years, Star Wars fans have been waiting for a ultimate edition boxed set, with new effects, added scenes, and new DVD extras, to no avail. Many believed that the ultimate-set would come in 2007, for the 30th anniversary of Star Wars (episode 4), but it didn't , fueling the fans into a frenzy. Recently, in the making of Star Wars in Concert featurette, which aired on PBS, a production director remarked that Lucas commented that the updated digital Yoda was used in the special edit they prepared for the concert, before he got a chance to use it to replace the "puppet Yoda" in episode 1 (and presumably in episodes 5 and 6).

At this point Lucas has not officially commented on wether he is indeed releasing the "Ultimate collection" fans have been clamoring for, fueling the endless speculation. As of right now, only Lucas and his team know for sure. It's a good bet the ultimate set is coming— it's just a question of when. Until them, May the Force Be With Us All.
