A few weeks back, Google announced a plan to bring ludicrous speed Internet to a few cities in the US. It was a huge hit, even prompting Topeka, Kansas to change their name to Google. Well hopefully JS Online’s report that Milwaukee is making a play for Google’s ISP is a sign of something more serious from our city.
JS reports that even in Wisconsin there is some competition, as Madison is reportedly making a bid for the service, and I have to admit that already having a division of Google in their city may be in a better position to win. Sadly this is a sign that our city needs to take tech seriously. Many of the naysayers are going to point out that UW ensure Madison will always attract more tech businesses, but like any other business, tech companies just need the right incentives.
Appleton and Marshfield have made a less serious play as well, showing that the program has generated huge interest. When Milwaukee does make its plan public, it should be a larger part of a plan to develop the tech community in the area. Whatever comes next, Milwaukee needs to develop tech as a viable option for this city. Google may be a big help, but we shouldn’t depend on Mountain View to develop our city.
