We all need a little brain break sometimes. I like playing games online, for free. I've never bought a game because my interest wanes rather quickly as soon as I get the hang of it.
I particularly like "hidden object" games. Each game of this genre has it's own theme and various scenarios. In general, there will be a scene pictured and you'll be given a list of objects to look for in the picture. Some are more complicated than others. But there all fun way to sharpen your skills at observation.
There are a number of sites that offer a lot of games of all kinds to play; free online versions, trial versions you can download and play for a limited time and of course full versions you'll have to pay for.
A few games on many of these sites can't be played online at all and are only available for purchase or as a a trial download. You'll usually be asked to sign up for free to download a game. If you're concerned about using your email address, use a disposable one. However, I've used my real email address and have never had a problem with any of these sites. They ocassionally send updates about new games.
Here's a list in which I've included my favorite game sites. Some are pretty popular and you might all ready be familiar with them. Others are lesser known and, I think, worth checking out.
Play free online, download trials or buy:
GameHouse ( Mac & Windows) is one of the more popular game sites. Games galore here. You can create a profile and discuss games in the forum.
BigFishGames (Mac and Windows) has a broad selection of games and lots of categories. There's also a game community and forum. I've never seen a game here that cost more than about $7.
PopCap (Mac & Windows) is another popular site. Popcap has a fan page on Facebook. Yes, I'm a fan. My favorite games here are Rocket Mania, Atomica and Alchemy.
King.com (Windows, not all games are Mac compatible) has fewer games than Big Fish and some of the others. However, you'll find some games here you won't see on other sites. My favorite here is Majhong Fortuna. The games here are pretty expensive so if you'd like to buy a game check to see if you can get the same game somewhere else for less.
Spogg (Mac & Windows) this is more of a game community. They have their own multi-player online games. You can play against others and chat too. I like playing Ooze and Solitaire with other players on this site. There are usually enough "rooms" open for you to play by yourself if you're in a solitary mood.
Totally free games:
Open Source Games for Windows (from Sourceforge.net) has lots of totally free games in lots of categories.
Free Windows Games a few free games and game packs. I like Penguin Panic.
thriftmac is a directory of free software, including games for Mac OS.
Frisky Freeware all kinds of freeware, including games for Mac
PumpkinGames (Mac & Windows) has a few games you won't find elsewhere. I like Alien
Abduction.
Orisinal: Morning Sunshine is an award winning flash game site by Ferry Halim. This the most beautiful game site on the web and you won't find any of these games elsewhere. Don't be fooled by the "cuteness" of some of them. They are more challenging than they might appear at first sight. However, they are all very intuitive and suitable for players of all ages. My grandchildren, ages 5 thru 13 and I, all have lots of fun playing Orisinal games. Our favorites are The Amazing Dare Dozen, Silent Water, Force and Three Monkeys.
