Use Gmail? Ever thought of adding images in your emails as links to your blog, web site, Twitter profile or where ever? It can be done very easily. You will need to enable insertion of pictures in Gmail. To do this click on SETTINGS in Gmail. It will be in the upper right corner of your Gmail page. Locate the LABS tab in settings and click on that.

You will see an abundance of very cool features In LABS. The feature to insert images directly into your emails is nearer the bottom of the list. Click to enable it then continue to the bottom of the page to save your settings and return to Gmail.

This image insertion is very cool all by itself, allowing you to add images directly into your emails as opposed to including them as attachments. Let's do a test. Let's compose a new email with an image as a link. Above your blank email, you'll notice a new picture icon in the Compose Toolbar, just above the window. Click the picture icon. The following box will open and you can browse your files for an image you like to insert (or you can choose an image from the web, if you like).

Once, the image is loaded, click Add Image. (See below.) I'm using a free Twitter egg icon from Graphics Leftovers. You can use any image you like.

The image should be on your email. To make this image a link, select it by clicking on it. A box will appear around the image. Now, select the link icon in the Compose Toolbar. Now you can choose whether you want the image to link to a web or email address. I chose web here and just to mess around, I'll make this Twitter icon link to my blog... just to to show that it doesn't matter what the image is; it will link to whatever web address you enter here. Leave the text box blank. In this case, you're using the image, not text, as a link. After you've pasted in the link of your choice, you can test it out with Test this link, just below your entry. Testing will open your link in a new window and keep your compse page open. If your link goes to the right place, click OK.

You'll see your image in your email with a box around it. It's now a link.

If you'd like to add a text link next to it... just in case, type the text and select it so it's highlighted (just as you would when you select text to cut or copy). Now you'll see the text you highlighted in the Text to display box.

Enter the web address the same way you did for the image. Test the link then click okay.

You're done.
