The answer is "never," of course. Yet, for some reason it happens. Here is a video of Illinois Congressman John Shimkus reading from the Bible at a House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment hearing.
I don't know what is more frightening... that people like this are in political positions of power or that there are people in this country who vote for and support people who bastardize this nation by dragging their religion into their politics. They may as well be using the Constitution to wipe their asses. In my estimation, he should lose his job. There really should be a law against this sort of nonsense... ahem.
And what does this say about the state of American politics in general? Will we ever emerge from these dark times? David Silverman, Vice President of American Atheists, said "How discouraging it is to see a compete idiot like this telling us in an official capacity that we need not worry about Environmental issues because the invisible Magic Man-in-the-sky will destroy the world when he sees fit. Imagine the damage this moron could cause!"
I think Shimkus should move to Texas and live with McLeroy and be a part of the threatened (do it already!) secession.
