It always amuses me when religious leaders seemingly intentionally misrepresent atheists. Their motives are so transparent. They state their case, then go about attacking it. The unfortunate truth is that often times these people are held in great esteem and people look to them for guidance. And those gullible people buy into the lies and misrepresentations lock, stock, and barrel.
By now I have gotten used to the likes of Ray Comfort espousing nonsense like "atheists believe that nothing created everything." I, for one, have grown to expect such drivel from people like him. But I have to say that I was honestly a little surprised when I heard the recent reports of what Cardinal William Levada supposedly said. For some reason, I expect more (silly me) from a cardinal than I do from someone like Comfort.
According to an Associated Press report, Levada "...described as 'absurd' the atheist notion that evolution proves there is no God." And reportedly he was speaking on behalf of the Vatican.
I have to say that the notion that atheists hold a "notion that evolution proves there is no God" is absurd. Just as I cannot think of one atheist who has ever said "I believe that nothing created everything," I cannot think of one atheist who ever said "evolution proves there is no God." That is not to say that I have heard every atheist who has ever existed speak on either topic, but, if it were a dominant line of thinking, I would expect to have run across it at least once. But, I haven't.
What ever happened to "thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor?" Oh, I forgot... all they have to do is apologize to Jesus... no harm, no foul. It seems that asking Jesus for forgiveness is like having a "Get out of Hell free" card.
So, really, I want to know. How many atheists believe that evolution "proves" that God does not exist?
