I was asked recently what my story Is the Pope out of touch? had to do with atheism. Well, actually, it has a lot to do with atheism.

As an anti-religious atheist (not to be confused with an anti-theist atheist), I am pleased anytime any pope’s actions drive a wedge into that which he is meant to preserve – Catholicism – Christianity. It also amuses me when he does anything that seems to be devoid of good judgment as he is esteemed as the pillar of righteousness and wisdom.

I, like many atheists, believe that religion is a corrupt and vile institution. And Catholicism, The Vatican in particular, is perhaps the wealthiest guardian of lies and secrets on the planet. It is disturbing that its manipulative influence is so far reaching.

Under the guise of morality, the Church’s teachings and orders have led to death, corruption, and hatred. That which it preaches is responsible for people “justifiably” being persecuted, oppressed, and denied basic human rights every day around the globe.

Is Catholicism alone in this? Of course not. But, the power it wields over the masses is a dominating force against which reasonable people fight every day.

In the United States, Christianity perverts our government more than any other religion, as it does in other nations. It dictates, in some instances, when stores can be open, how taxpayer money is spent, what laws exist, and how human rights are doled out, among other things.

So, when a pope falters, it has a great deal to do with atheism, in my estimation – especially when the bumbling causes dissention amongst the Church’s ranks. It gives me hope that religion, to which many atheists are so opposed, may be rattled. So, of course, I will share the news, because there are very few things that would please me more than to see religion eradicated from the face of the earth.
