Three years ago, Mamie Manneh was charged with smuggling endangered monkey meat into the United States. Her lawyer argued that it was her First Amendment right to have the meat as Liberian Christians, like Manneh, eat the meat for spiritual reasons as part of their religion.
This past Wednesday, US District Judge, Raymond J. Dearie, said that although Manneh had the right to eat the meat, she did not have the right to break the law to obtain said meat.
If she is convicted, Manneh could serve up to five years in jail and could potentially be deported.
