#4
O’Dea
Last year was a disappointment for the Fighting Irish. Not only were they denied a return trip to the state championship game, but they also lost the Metro League title. While something like that would hurt any team, it was devastating for the Irish. Before the 2008 campaign, O’Dea had captured the league championship in 12 of the previous 14 seasons. While their defense last year was pretty solid, allowing only 12 points per game, their offense sputtered, at least compared to the 2007 team that went to the title game. The 2007 team put up an impressive 541 points. Last year’s team, however, only managed to eke out 291 - that’s a 250 point swing. The 2007 team DID play three more games than this year’s squad, but it still shows how much O’Dea’s offense fell apart. The Fighting Irish are in a rebuilding stage, much like any good team goes through after years of success. They remain in the top five, however, because of their defense. If you can hold a team to under two touchdowns per game on a consistent basis, you WILL win games, guaranteed.
