Super Monkey Ball takes advantage of the
acceleromoeter function of the iPhone.

So you’ve gone and gotten yourself or somebody you hold dear an iPhone for the holidays.  Excellent.  Keeping in touch is always an important thing to do.  Yet if you use the iPhone just to make phone calls and store music, you’re missing out on some of the best features of the iPhone.

Some folks wonder just what makes the iPhone so interesting and exciting.  Well, Phone and iPod in one aside, there are two features that are quite a boon to this phone.  The first is Multi-Touch.

Perhaps it’s time to bring some folks up to date on this idea.  You see, as touch screens got developed, became commonplace, and then even made it onto all sorts of consumer devices, one of the main limitations of a touch-screen was that it is very like a mouse.  One point, one position, one touch at a time.  You touch somewhere and the system registers it.  It you touched in more than one place… well, look out.  Confused computer time.  Go ahead, you can try it if you have access to a touch screen device.

The iPhone has Multi-Touch technology though.  What this means in a nutshell is that you can touch in two or more places at the same time and the system can recognize each individual point of contact and respond appropriately.  What this does for you is allow you to interact more naturally.  Is the picture too big?  Literally “pinch” it down to size using your thumb and finger.  The opposite action enlarges it.

The second item of interest in the iPhone is its accelerometer.  That’s a big word that simply means the phone knows which way is down.  The basic use of this is knowing whether you are holding the phone straight up and down, or holding it sideways, and automatically adjusting the screen for the direction you have it.

But really, these two features carry much more value to them.  The Multi-Touch capability makes things like the iPhone Ocarina app by Smule possible.  The accelerometer means that Super Monkey Ball and similar applications allow you to tilt your way through the operation of the program.  Nothing like a game that requires no button pushing.

So, if you’re one of the folks who have this phone, be sure to check out the App Store to find out just how much more your phone can do.
