Body On Tap

August 25, 3:40 PM
by Arika Casebolt, Baltimore Beauty Examiner

Your skin is a marvelous, miraculous organ. It works 24-7, protecting you from pathogens and bacteria, regenerating itself and constantly adjusting to your needs. Healthy skin will rise to almost any occasion.

Somehow, the skin on the body is often treated as the redheaded stepchild when it comes to its care and feeding. Isn't that a shame? I used to be guilty of this practice myself, and I'm a professional, so it doesn't surprise me anymore when I see women who are meticulous about exfoliating and hydrating the skin on their faces, but use whatever's in the shower to wash their bodies.  I can understand why;  your face is always exposed for the world to examine, while the rest is usually swaddled in clothing, so if you're pressed for time, you prioritize. Who's gonna see it?You, that's who. Isn't that enough of a reason?

This sort of epidermal triage is practiced by women everywhere, me included, but several years ago I  began to really pay attention to the skin below, as well as above my neck, and now it doesn't seem like a hassle. It is integrated it into my routine, and it has made a remarkable difference.

When you begin to really care for your skin, especially the skin that the world at large doesn't  see, a sort of systematic shift occurs in the way you view yourself. Especially when you, and maybe a select few others, are the only ones who reap the benefits. It feels good to walk around knowing that you have taken an extra few minutes to treat your body's skin right. It is great for the self-esteem, especially when you see the results. You start gliding around with newfound confidence, secure in the knowledge that all your bases are covered.

Peter Thomas Roth makes incredible body care. The company's new body washes cover all the bases too. There are three formulas that address almost every body's needs; all three contain tiny exfoliating beads bursting with vitamins A, C, E and pro-vitamin B5. The tiny bubbles burst when you massage them into your skin as you shower, gently nourishing and hydrating that bod of yours. I'm using the Anti-Aging formula (hey, every little bit helps), which boasts moderate doses of salicylic and glycolic acids to increase cell turnover and reveal smoother, brighter, softer skin. It works, and fast- I noticed a difference in the texture of my skin within days. Plus, the scent is subtle and sophisticated, citrusy but not at all overwhelming. As a bonus, the Anti-Aging version contains White Willow extract, which contains a boost of extra salicylic derivative and discourages hair growth. It is perfect.

There are also Botanical and Blemish formulas. The Botanical one has whole leaf aloe in addition to the vitamin-packed beads, and can be used even on sensitive skin. It smells light and fresh, and feels wonderfully gentle and soft, which is how your booty will feel as well.

The Blemish version is spiked with a hearty 1% salicylic acid to treat and prevent acne and blackheads on breakout-prone bodies. I recommend this one to clients who have been plagued with chest and back breakouts (or, 'Backne", as we in the biz call it). Lots of people suffer from annoying body blemishes, particularly in summer, when folks are more active. It smells great, very clean and vaguely spicy, and is great for guys too.

Treat that body right, because it's the only one you've got.

The Truth As We Know It

May 18, 3:16 PM
I am cautiously optimistic but really skeptical when it comes to cosmetics. On a daily basis, because of the optimism part, I read tons of promotional materials about this cosmetic or that cleanser or the other styling concoction. They all claim... Read More
