Little Luxuries

July 26, 9:43 PM

Thank you for your patience, dear reader. Sitting up is still the most difficult move since the back surgery, hence the long wait between posts. I assure you I am mending rapidly, though, and have loads of goodies in store.

Speaking of the surgery, my companion informed me that when I awoke in the recovery room, I peered at him from within the fog of aenesthesia and promptly demanded my lipstick. I do not remember this, but it sounds about right. To me, makeup is not a means to an end. It is ritual, comfort, and luxury. A woman's maquillage or lack thereof can be transformer and trademark.

So you can imagine my frustration in the fact that I now despise the cosmetics I brought with me. I am aware that it isn't one bit rational, but I associate the contents of my bag during the whole ordeal with, well, the whole ordeal. I try to use the lip gloss I love so well, and my nostrils fill with hallucinated odors of antiseptic, alcohol and industrial floor cleaner.

Since I'm doing the whole Rear Window thing these days, I'm in no condition to buy replacements for my hospital-infused makeup bag, financially or physically. But there is a ray of hope for me, reader. It just so happens that Nordstrom is having a semiannual Beauty Exclusives event through August 4. Cosmetics companies offer limited-edition colors, formulas, or packaging and deluxe sizes of their products exclusively sold at Nordstrom. And I can shop online! Take that, Jimmy Stewart. There is some really great stuff this time, and in a shocking display of restraint and self-discipline, I've allowed myself only two treats.

I adore the satisfying click of a Chanel compact. Chanel Illuminating Powder in So Chanel is a silky, softly glimmering highlighting powder in the prettiest subtle pink. The shade has been available only in Europe until now, so it's extra special.

Korres, the fabulous Greek holistic skincare company, has added Kings and Queens to their repertoire. The line of bath and body products are scented to represent various monarchies in history. I'm into spicy, woodsy, incensy scents, so I'm going for the Caspar Myrrh shower gel.

Okay, so this has nothing to do with replacing my hospitalized makeup, but my birthday is coming up...
