What makes Baltimore unique in its obsession with hair is that there are no rules whatsoever. It is not unusual to see a soaring, lacquered pinkish beehive right alongside a slick, black greaser pompadour and a carefully arranged flip that would do a 1972 Mary Tyler Moore proud. Baltimore rocks its own style in all aspects, and our crowning glories are no exception.
I don't need to tell you how very important it is to find the right hairstylist, just as it is to find the right waxer, facialist, or anyone who is intimately involved with one's personal maintenance. I have hopped between cities and stylists during the last twenty-odd years, and the very best anywhere in the Baltimore-DC area is Sarah Cathcart.
Sarah's calm, laid-back presence, her superior skill in cutting and color, her patience(many times I have ruined her work by coloring or cutting my own hair, and she never ever gets mad at me) and her general aura of serene beauty are just a few of the things that set her apart. I always know I can trust her completely. She is an excellent listener, and exceptionally skilled at translating a client's needs and descriptions into flattering reality.
I call her the Hair Whisperer. She has been doing hair for fourteen years, the majorty of that time right here in town. After a yearlong stint styling celebrities and high rollers in Las Vegas, Sarah returned to her beloved City of Charm and opened her own salon, Crash in Fells Point, in July of 2005. Last year, Sarah discovered she was going to be a mommy, and decided to sell Crash. She's now perched at Zena's Salon and Spa in Mt. Vernon, and while it can be tough to get an appointment with this most gifted of stylists, she always does her best to accommodate, and she is well worth the wait.
Sarah loves her work. I could totally relate when she told me that before she became a stylist, she had always dreamed of doing hair but couldn't imagine making a living doing it. I felt exactly the same way about being an aesthetician, and the way she talks about her job makes it obvious that she is truly passionate about what she does. She treats each of her clients as if they were her only one.
"My favorite thing to do is a change," she says. "Whether that means a new cut, color or both, I love a challenge. One of the things I like most about doing hair is seeing how even subtle differences can really change the way a person looks."
Amen, sister.
