Ryan Hunter-Reay on Bump Day '09
Andy Sallee/Motorsport.com

While no big surprise (we've been hearing about this for months), IZOD is the new title sponsor of the IndyCar series.  Anti-climactic or not, it is the best off-track news for the series.  It should lead to more marketing and a significant infusion of dollars.

Speaking of IZOD, Ryan Hunter-Reay, who enjoys a "personal services" contract with the clothing company, might finally have a quality ride.  Yes, one can make a very good case that AGR is not what it once was, but when compared to A.J. Foyt Enterprises and Vision Racing, RHR must feel like he's struck gold.  Many would say (your Examiner included), that Hunter-Reay would immediately become the second-beat driver on the team, behind Tony Kanaan.

Of course, AGR's "third driver" (should Hunter-Reay join the team*) is STILL in the news.  Yes, the Danica-to-NASCAR stories are still with us and reached a new peak about 10 days ago.  The latest information is that Danica will participate in a partial ARCA and Nationwide schedule for JR Motorsports in 2010 and 2011.  All the while, she will still compete full-time in the IndyCar Series for AGR.

In truth, this story has been around for quite some time.  The only new information is that she will partner with Dale Jr.'s team.  Other than that, your humble Examiner stands by his (and Juan Pablo Montoya's) analysis.  This will end badly for all involved, including IndyCar.  Most of all, this is NOT a serious effort.  If it were, she would quit IndyCar now and train in stock cars full-time.  Trying to do both will only take away from both.

Will Power (the best name in racing) will apparently get a well-deserved full-time ride in a third Penske car.  Given more time on the ovals, the Aussie becomes an immediate championship contender.

Finally, on IZOD again, Robin Miller sums up how positive a development this truly is.  Since it began compettition on 1996, the IRL front office has rarely gotten things right.  For once, they came through in a major way.

*Really, how pathetic has Marco been when he can now be considered the fourth best driver at AGR?  Stunning, when you think about it.
