Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon dominated Saturday's IndyCar season finale at Homestead. Briscoe led gthe most laps, while Dixon recorded the fastest lap of the race. The two led for a combined 173 of 200 laps.
Meanwhile, Dario Franchitti won the race and championship. By deciding early on to only conserve fuel, while (barely) staying on the lead lap, Franchitti made the caution-free race on one less stop than his quicker rivals.
Briscoe and Dixon had the speed, but lacked good fortune. One caution, particularly near the end, would likely have turned everything around. That caution never came, a first in IRL history.
Franchitti is obviously happy to be back in IndyCar. After a year off, it was like he never left. In the end, he won on ovals, street courses, and road courses. He is a deserving champion.
BTW: For those upset that fuel mileage determined the championship, well, it is a part of racing. Your humble Examiner made this point 18 months ago.
