It looks as if the travel industry is in need of a bailout. Gadling reports that nearly 200,000 travel-related jobs were lost in 2008, and another 247,000 are estimated for this year. As workers across the country are laid off or scale back their expenses, they are traveling less, and it’s not just the travel agents and corporate suits at the airlines who are suffering. Waiters, housekeepers, airport janitors and everyone else down the “travel supply chain” is experiencing the domino effect of the downturn. Consummate guidebook publisher Lonely Planet has announced that it, too, is struggling in the recession and will have to lay off 10 percent of its workforce.

The travel industry is clearly in need of a stimulus. When major airlines announce they may have to start charging customers to use the restroom, it’s clearly time for change. And that change, like President Obama’s economic recovery plan, is to keep spending -- or in this case, traveling. I’ve mentioned a few recession-buster travel deals recently. And here are three more:

  1. Jumping on the JetBlue bandwagon, cruise companies are announcing layoff cancellation plans. In the unfortunate event that you lose your job between booking your cruise vacation and departure, CruiseOne and Cruises Inc. will refund your trip under their new CruiseAssurance plan.
  2. Are you one of the unfortunate ones who have already been let go? Use your “time off” to your advantage by capitalizing on Intrepid Travel’s offer to take 15 percent off a small-group adventure trip. With trips to more than 100 countries, you’re bound to find something to take your mind off things.
  3. As businesses cut back on expenses, travel to events and conventions are one of the first things to go. Unfortunately for the nation’s top convention cities -- Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago, New York, Miami, Atlanta, Anaheim, New Orleans, San Francisco, Dallas, San Diego and Washington -- the lack of convention-goers means serious dents in city coffers. But for budget-minded leisure travelers, it means deals abound. USA Today reports that convention cities are slashing rates and offering deals to lure travelers. Lucky for us.
