Bad news for high schoolers headed to study abroad programs in France: It looks like President Nicholas Sarkozy is set to raise the legal drinking age from 16 to 18. In a country known for its storied wineries -- and liberal drinking laws -- the change would be meant to curb dangerous alcohol addiction among teens, the government said.

Opponents are concerned, though, that the law could usher in a binge drinking culture similar to the one in this country, the Wall Street Journal reports. And winemakers say a stricter law could reverse the age-old French custom of parents teaching children how to taste and appreciate wine at meals.

This will be an interesting development to follow and watch its enforcement. What are your thoughts?
