I think my hands-down favorite thing about D.C. is the sheer abundance of free activities. Take, for instance, the new exhibit at the National Gallery of Art,
Pride of Place: Dutch Cityscapes of the Golden Age. Coinciding with the 400th anniversary of the Dutch exploration and settlement of New York’s Hudson River Valley, this exhibit features paintings, maps, atlases and books that depict the Netherland's cities: Amsterdam, Delft and Haarlem, among others.
According to the National Gallery, a booming economy in the 17th century and affluent urbanites ushered in this new style of painting which became a forum for civic pride. I don’t know about you, but with all the worry about our current economic woes, I could use a refreshing escape to happier times. Go with your significant other this weekend and imagine you’re on a Valentine’s Day stroll along the canals, minus the plane ticket to Schiphol (though,
check this out: less than $400 on Iberia and Delta -- not bad!).
The exhibit, which opened this month, is on display in the National Gallery’s West Building through May 3.
