I’ve always been a fan of the train. I grew up in a town that was long ago abandoned by passenger trains, so trekking to nearby towns to catch the City of New Orleans was always an adventure and a special treat. I still maintain that romanticized notion, despite living in the most rail-heavy corridor this side of the Atlantic. And recently I’ve been contemplating switching my primary mode of eastern seaboard transport from bus to train. Lucky for me, Amtrak is offering a number of specials right now to entice passengers to climb aboard.
In its ongoing weekend getaway fare deal, Amtrak is offering one-way fares from DC’s Union Station to 15 east coast destinations for as little as $20. Treks to Philly cost only $36 each way, and New York is just $49. The catch is the tickets have to be on Northeast Regional or Keystone trains. And they’ve got to be purchased at least three days in advance. A one-night Saturday stay is permitted, but the return trip must be booked by 10:59 a.m. on Sunday. With those prices, though, you can hit up all the destinations without breaking the bank.
In a limited-time promotion, Amtrak is also offering a buy-three-get-one-ride-free promotion on its speedy Acela. Members of the Guest Rewards program can register their qualifying trips starting today through March 14. Three one-way segments earn passengers a free ride. Essentially, every other round trip is half off – not a bad deal.
