For a traveler on a budget, there’s nothing better than free. Travelers headed to the nation’s capital – and residents – are lucky because of the profusion of free things to do around the city. Periodically, I’ll offer up suggestions of these free activities. Today: free New Year’s Eve activities.
Night light: Hundreds of luminaries are burning at the Franciscan Monastery 24 hours a day through New Year’s Eve. Bundle up and stroll through the churchyard at the Rosary Portico [1400 Quincy St. NE; (202) 526-6800].
Arts eve: Take the whole family on an international immersion into the arts at the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities’ free Arts Eve DC event from 1 to 5 p.m. Hands-on arts and crafts activities, story-telling and films are among the scheduled events as well as interactive performances of artistic and cultural customs from Ethiopia, Italy, Mexico, Korea and the United States [Historical Society of Washington; 801 K St. NW; (202) 724-5613].
Down some bubbly: Feel like dressing up in festive finery and hitting the town – without shelling out $100+ for a pricey gala event? Several bars and nightclubs around town offer all the fun minus the cover charge – with the added bonus of party favors and midnight champagne toasts. Check out Café St.-Ex, Stetson’s and Marvin in the U Street neighborhood. Or find a watering hole close to your neck of the woods on Washington Post’s Going Out Guide.
Music and fireworks: Baltimore’s annual New Year’s Eve Spectacular at the Inner Harbor features fireworks and live music while you count down the end of 2008 [Pratt and Lights Streets; 1-877-BALTIMORE].
