New York is a magical place to visit during the holidays and located just a little more than 200 miles from the district, you really can’t afford not to go. Ice skate under the tree in Rockefeller Center. Window shop at FAO Schwartz and Tiffany and Co. (Or venture inside if you’re truly brave – just remember we’re on a budget.) Drink hot chocolate in the Plaza, a la Eloise. Whisper your most coveted Christmas wish to Santa at Macy’s. Best of all, forget about paying upward of $150 to take the train or a plane. For less than $50—or as little as $1.50—trek from Metro Center to NYC’s Penn Station in about the same amount of time as you could ride the rails or fly (security check and waiting times included).
Launched earlier this year, the Bolt Bus and Megabus each offer multiple daily services from D.C. to the Big Apple, as well as a few other Eastern seaboard locales. They’re newer, cleaner—and perhaps safer—than the Chinatown buses. Plus, trips come with swank luxuries like WiFi and electrical outlets. You won’t find that on the Greyhound.
Ticket prices increase with demand, starting at an unbelievable $1 each way (plus 50 cent booking fee) and increasing up to about $40 per seat (though I’ve never paid more than $50 for a round-trip).
So instead of heading out to Pentagon City this weekend to tackle your Christmas shopping list, head to Fifth Avenue instead. Just think, if you score the $1 tickets, that’s cheaper than the Metro fare.
